"My favorite cat was Sailor. When he came here, he had been shot in the side with a BB gun. He was really sweet. We could tell that he loved it here and when he was adopted, all of us were sad, but he went to a good home. The best thing about Santé D'Or is how much they help and care. At first you think they are regular people trying to keep animals alive, but once you get to know them, they aren't regular at all. They're heroes really."

PROGRAMS

We have several programs at Santé D’Or Foundation which help us connect with and serve our community. Here are a few examples of our current programs.

Junior Volunteer Program

Some of our hardworking Junior Volunteers take a break: Libby and the two Dianas

Volunteering for Santé D’Or can be an invaluable experience. We strongly believe in the importance of learning from an early age how to relate to and interact with animals. The notion of volunteering for a cause beyond oneself is also something we in the organization all live by and hope to impart to our young volunteers.

We welcome the involvement of volunteers as young as age 11. This sets us apart from many rescues, as most do not accept volunteers under the age of 17. After obtaining parental permission, young people are trained to help with our operations, particularly our weekend adoption days. Junior volunteers can fulfill their school’s community service requirements or complete various class projects through this program. We plan to connect interested children from group homes and foster homes to our junior program as well.

Community Outreach Program

During Saturday and Sunday adoptions, Santé D’Or invites people from the community to bring in and showcase pets that need to be adopted.

Our goal in opening our adoptions to others is to provide a much-needed service to the community. We provide consultation, advice and education to affiliates of our rescue and to members of the general public.

We also take every opportunity to educate the public on the importance of spaying and neutering.

Please contact us to find out more information if you are interested in participating in our Community Outreach Program.

Humane Education Program

Santé D’Or Foundation, in partnership with CBS’s Community Service Initiative, giving a humane education presentation at the 59th Street School in Los Angeles

In 2007, we participated in a new community service program at CBS. Through this program, we partnered with an underprivileged school that was also participating in the CBS program. In April, Santé D’Or brought two dogs to the school and gave a presentation to the students regarding how to take care of and approach animals. The students made donation jars as part of an arts and crafts project and collected coins over a period of a few weeks.

Senior Adoption Program

A newer effort is our Senior Adoption Program, in which we match older cats and dogs to senior individuals.

We believe in the cathartic effect animals and people have on one another. The companionship an animal can bring to a senior individual is matched by the care and focused attention seniors often can bring to an older companion animal.

This program involves an ongoing counseling process, in order to evaluate the safety and well-being of the animal and the person involved. To support the special needs of this relationship, adoption fees through this program can be reduced or waived.

Lynxie would make a terrific companion for an affectionate senior!
